I thought I want to answer tag from Nina on how well you know your husband.. but then visited Tun Dr Mahathir's website, che det. I read about Pengajaran & Pembelajaran Sains dan Matematik dalam Bahasa Inggeris (PPSMI). Honestly, I was quite against this PPSMI.. sebab? hmm.. well.. let me put it this way..
1. I stay in Beijing, China. In China, locals proud of their language and outsider need to learn Mandarin to communicate and interact.
2. I did have opportunity to have a short stay (a month and a half) in Paris. French people also proud of their language and barely want to speak English (some times even if they can!) so point 1 & 2 make me want to be proud of bahasa.. untuk membudayakan bahasa.. (tp saya nih ckp tak serupa bikin.. saya selalu guna bahasa rojak! abah tok, now i see your point!)
3. There is someone I know whom, when he was small, he used to be among the last in his class, don't really like to learn and study as no one push him to do so. until he had a teacher who gave him free tuition, helped him, encourage him to study. and thanks to that teacher, he's able to have interest in study and succeed. as for this young kid, whom I see as representative of average children/student, how are they going to succeed if Math and Science is taught in English? even in bahasa its already hard enough for them as they have no one to help them out with study? now even in English? who're going to help them with homework and study as their own parents dont even speak or know a word in English.. thus, as for me, this will bring a big gap between average students and smart students. average students could be far left behind.
4. and worse, many teachers have not conquer english very well. so how are they going to be able to deliver in english?
these are just some of my worries.. but TDM has his points why PPSMI should continue.. what u guys think?

Fatin,
ReplyDeleteThis is my opinion pulak hehe.
for me, i'm all about ppsmi. Because my daughter could speak good english, so if a 3-4 year old could do it, why can't the teachers and students? And of course kalau dibentuk dari rebungnya, (start from standard 1) they'll get really good at it. And I taught in university, it was kinda sad seeing all the malays, they want to learn, but what is stopping them is their inability to master english (sebab engineering books are in english). Sains n Maths in English won't make much difference, sebab banyak words in Science pun is a translation from English to Malay such as Condensation - Kondensasi etc. Kalau anak2 melayu diajar dari awal dalam english, kita akan dapat hasilkan anak2 melayu yg jauh lagi bagus, n at par n setanding dengan anak2 cina etc. Tengok aje best student yang miskin tu, english didn't stop her to excel.
I think tak perlu tengok negara2 maju seperti china, japan, france. Tengok aje negara2 mundur seperti indonesia, vietnam, thailand. they can't speak english and they're struggling at it. at least orang malaysia is much better. And japanese too, they are also learning english. Nasib baik untuk kita, kita dah belajar masa kecil, so it's not that bad for us.
itu la dilema nyer nina.. i have to agree that many educational books are in english.. so, y not translate them to bahasa? here in china/beijing.. byk sgt tau buku ditranslate to mandarin.. so their ppl can read them. or maybe we can make 2 school or two version/session in same school.. one delivered in malay n one delivered in english.. up to their choice.. anak nina untung sbb u're smart n u're able to teach n help them with their education. my worry is when i see anak org biasa.. or anak org susah.. mardhiah tuh dok asrama.. and she already had her basic.. which learn in bahasa.. rasenyer masa dia sekolah rendah belum lagi start ppsmi.. so diff.. camne anak org kebanyakan yg tak duduk asrama.. bukan kah ini buat mereka makin jauh ketinggalan.. kalu ade cikgu yg make extra effort helping out.. ok laa.. kalu tak.. abis la.. padahal budak2 itu bukan tak pandai.. otak ade n bijak..
ReplyDeletebtw the way i see.. about org2 dr negara maju.. its not just they r from negara maju.. but their attitude as well as their inner self.. they r strong ppl.. their women, their men are strong.. they're willing doing kerja susah/remeh by themselves.. org kiter? oh.. keje nih kiter import org indon.. keje yg nih lak amik buruh from bangladesh.. org kiter lak sumer nak senang.. (m not excepted.. but learning to be strong)
ReplyDeletehonestly.. fatin tidak la against sgt ppsmi ini.. in fact.. fatin honesly lagi suka kot utk anak2 kami.. cuma.. fatin pk camne anak org lain.. specially yg bukan di bandar n org susah.. is it too late jika sains n math diajar in english in peringkat sekolah menengah? sbb kan.. masa sek ren.. bole la budak2 strong basic in math dulu n (skang dah diajar ker sains in sek ren? i'm lost a bit about this..) maybe sek ren.. cikgu boleh juga introduce term in english sikit2.. tp biar la budak2 sek ren specially betul2 kuasai dulu basic math n sains.. thanks ita.. fatin pun dok pk nak tanya sepupu yg mengajar blk msia nanti.. (sbb tak keep in touch di alam maya)
ReplyDeletesusah nak kata yes or no to this matter...sbb dua2 pun baik, and of course ada jugak disadvantages pada certain2 thing...tapi yg penting dua2 adalah niat yang baik, which is menuntut ilmu...cuma method yg berbeza...dgn ppsmi, most of the terms students dah familiar...bila kat univ. takde maslh dgn textbooks/mcm mana nak fhm terms...tapi kalau nak laksanakn, sume kena well prepared...be it the teacher, or the material/syllabus itself...and yg penting, kena tgk mcm mana nak evaluate those students from rural area...and how to impart the knowledge to them...which some of them have lack of exposure to english language..so kementerian kena buat something kalau nak continue with ppsmi...tapi kalau guna bahasa melayu pun ok, selama ni kita berjaya jugak hasilkan good students, yang berjaya...cuma mungkin kita nak improve dari segi quantity or quality...
ReplyDeletekalau tanye kita, kita pun suka kalau anak2 kita start dgn english, since dari skrg pun kita dah dedahkan mereka dgn bahasa inggeris...tapi kita pun tak nak anak org lain yg takde kelebihan ni tak dpt peluang yg sama bila kat sekolah...peluang utk menguasai ilmu...it's not fair kan...
all in all, it's all about attitude jugak sbnrnye...there comes the japanese, chinese n french...attitude..and mcm kata fatin, they are strong...in and out...
my experience..kita graduated from UKM...masa tu belajar dlm malay...even textbooks dlm english, tapi bila tgk notes lecturer, some of the were using terms which has been translated to malay...nilai buku, akaun belum bayar, akaun belum terima etc...bila keje n masa master kat uitm mmg totally in english...tapi since kita dah ada knowledge tu, bila nak convert malay-english tu takde mslh sgt...and dah selalu baca dlm textbooks terms2 tu...mcm kata fatin, ilmu tu kita kena kuasai dulu...
honestly.. bila fatin discuss ngan abg bab nih.. fatin kata fatin teringin nak tgk result spm, first batch yg belajar science n math in english dr sek ren.. belum lagi kan.. so far.. means, basic mmg belajar straight in english.. tp ade yg kata kalu teruskan takut makin ramai anak2 ketinggalan.. hmm.. camne ye..
ReplyDeleteape kata kiter pakat ramai wat program sirih pulang ke gagang.. kiter2 yg ade masa wat kerja sukarela ajar budak2 sek ren basic in english to help them.. ok kah cadangan saya? hehe.. fatin pun suka ppsmi diteruskan.. tp fatin rase.. cara fatin berfikir.. adalah ape yg terbaik utk kebanyakan pelajar..
ReplyDeletebetul tu fatin, kemaslahatan umum...peluang pendidikan adalah yang sepatutnye diperolehi oleh semua anak2, tanpa mengambil kira latar belakang...sbb tu kalau nak teruskan ppsmi, kena betul2 tgk mcm mana nak make sure sume students dpt faedahnye...hak anak2...jgn ada students yg tak boleh pergi jauh hanye kerana polisi pendidikan...tapi tu lah, tanpa ppsmi pun kita dah keluarkan ramai insan2 yg berjaya kan...
ReplyDeleteactually fatin memang pelajar sekolah rendah belajar math and sains dalam bahasa inggeris... so last year tak silap ita batch pertama upsr.. pengalaman ita mengajar kat sekolah teknik pelajar belajar 10 subjek 7 dalam bahasa inggeris kecuali BM, sejarah dan pend. islam je tak english lain semua english.. nak kata bagus tak juga.. cikgu english kata budak buat karangan pun sekarang jadi teruk sebab confuse dengan term in math and science diaorang guna dalam karangan english...
ReplyDeletefatin cuma harap.. ape pun keputusan ppsmi ini adalah utk kebaikan bersama.. jika diteruskan pun baik.. maybe kene ade involve form masyarakat.. cam kiter.. turun padang bantu anak2/generasi muda ajar in english.. at least beri semangat perasaan nak belajar or interested in learning in english.. sesetgh budak biasa.. jadi tak suka belajar bila tak faham.. (fatin tuh ckp pandai.. dia tuh ade ke masa nak g sekolah dia blk or sekolah lain-since jauh dah lak sekolah lama saya since mama pindah shah alam nih.. hehe- utk bantu?) huhu.. kiter cuba la.. mane tahu.. jika ramai tolong begini.. kurang sikit masalah/gap.. ilmu yg diamal (specially jika kiter ajar from sek ren.. dorang amal sambil bila2.. insya-Allah) pahala masuk tuh smpi selagi budak tuh guna ilmu.. masya-Allah.. bestnyer..
ReplyDeletefatin, problem dgn translation ialah, maths n sains ialah ilmu yg berkembang. So sentiasa akan ada ilmu baru, kalau nak ditranslatekan pun, setiap hari beribu2 paper dihasilkan. Takkan boleh translate pun. Translation in bahasa melayu pun tak berapa bagus. End up students masuk univesiti kena juga baca dalam bahasa inggeris. My mom lecturer utm kl, penat tau nak kena translate setiap buku untuk student2 ni, sebab langsung tak paham bahasa inggeris. Tengok la berapa ribu buku yang ada, takde satu pun dalam bahasa malaysia. Sebenarnya students boleh aje buat. My adik, adik ipar, semua belajar dalam english. Terharu tengok diorg tanya kakak abang, apa jawapan. Biasalah semua benda bila mula2 start mmg susah, tapi lama2 dia ok lah.
ReplyDeletelets all pray for the best.. ape2 pun result nyer eh!
ReplyDeletehehe baca2 postings fa..rasa nak reply yg ni :)
ReplyDeletemy 2 cents. i think having Maths & science in english does not mean we r not proud of our language. hehe bnyk je lagi subjects lain that are conducted in malay. so for those yg kata tak bangga ke dgn bahasa sendiri, i feel this is not relevant. fact is, urusan rasmi masih lagi berjalan dlm BM. maths and science je ni.. wudnt make BM luntur ditelan zaman, insha Allah :)
Maths and science are evolving technologies and as much as we dont want to admit it, the knowledge mostly comes from the west. Books pun authored in english. my brother terpaksa beli buku korean and chinese utk belajar Go (the boardgame) because there are limited Go books in english. if u really3 want to learn something, it is best u master the language of where the knowledge originates from or where most of the books are from.
i do understand dilemma mereka yg tidak fasih berbahasa english which is why menda ni shud be done in phases. takleh la tiba2 je budak2 form 3 yg selama ni belajar in BM..tiba2 SPM depa in english. that wud not be fair.
whether the subjects are conducted in malay or english..sebenarnye dua2 pun ok. we were utm students ..product of belajar dlm BM kan? tp lecturer ajar campur2 hehe. tapi bila keja everything is in english and kita ok aje kan? hehe..
my idea is..sekalipun subject tu in english..tp bila ngaja tu ..alaaa im sure the teachers can ajar je campur2 hehe..tak salah :) takdela dari awal..dari good morning class hingga ke akhir dia speaking 100%. tu mmg la tough on the teachers.
pastu for starters utk exam, buat je dua choice mcm kat utm dulu.. nak jwb bm bleh, nak jwb english bleh. yg pasti technical terms will be in english. however way u explain it, terserah la bahasa ape pun :)
apa yg kita taknak is having brilliant students yg score banyak2 A masa kat Uni tapi bila interview fail because the interview is in english. then kalah plak dgn bangsa lain yg terer english.tak ke rugi.
this is for the good of anak bangsa gak.
wallahualam
zaf, u n nina have the same points.. i understand what both of u means.. and all u girls say are true.. for smart n hardworking students, name it, learn in what language, they surely can make it.. its just when it comes to counter students from low class family or from poor family whom dont care much about study n being success for future.. when we went to felda bukit aping (bukit aping ker? masa zaman utm dulu) me and abg had to handle group of felda kids that had no interest at all in study.. i was even challenge by one of them in trying to attract their interest to be success for thier pmr.. mase tuh.. fa punya tanduk pun kuar.. hangin ok.. dah la tak minat.. buat hal n cabar fa pulak.. dia siap suruh fa bg sebab kot nape bla2.. kami dpt budak2 yg agak nakal.. (if it's not too much for me to label them, but not all of them.. girls specially are well behaved ) i brained wash him and we're able to control him later.. and from what i heard later (from one of girl in our group.. he managed to get some A's or one A, and he was one of the students whom nobody expect would do, maybe org expect dia failed kot) so, these kind of students whom i worry.. coz there might be quite plenty of them specially in primary school.. many kids dont really interested in learning.. and shockly have to learn in english and when they go back home and ask their parents (whom not good in english or too busy and have no time for them) these kids may get lost and tercicir jauh dan jauh.. kalu time primary pun dah tercicir.. which in primary we learn the most basic things.. padahal.. budak2 ini bukan takde otak.. they might be genius.. cuma tak minat n minat awal2 dah termati.. sort of.. tp.. i really would love to see what result SPM for first batch yg belajar start darjah 1. that will be another 5 yrs to go.. kalu budak yg gagal or ketinggalan byk.. (sbb drop terus b4 spm ker..) means this ppsmi has really failed.. result budak2 sekarang adalah hasil belajar basic in malay.. except for result upsr..
